A commodity exchange is the type of market where commodities are dealt with. Almost any article of trade are bought and sold in commodity exchanges. Most of the leading commodity exchanges are found in USA and the UK. There are commodity exchanges existing in various other countries too. Based on the goods that are being traded and on their location and size, commodity exchanges differ significantly.

Certain exchanges are famed for trading in particular products. For example, the Chicago Board of Trade, the largest futures exchange, is famous for its trading activities in coffee and sugar. London is known for its metal exchange and petroleum exchange and so on and so forth. One can find commodity exchanges spread throughout the world in places like Brazil, China, Canada, South Africa, Japan, and Russia, to mention only a few countries.

Commodity exchanges commonly deal with agricultural products like Soya products, sunflower seeds, corn, beans, coffee, or other grains. Dairy products and meat are also items which are extensively traded through commodity exchanges. The closing prices set by leading commodity exchanges have huge impact on the trade around the world. Petroleum products like crude oil, gasoline, and precious metals are also dealt widely by commodity exchanges.

One can trade in futures or options in these commodity exchanges. When it comes to futures, one is bound by a contract which specifies the delivery of a commodity at a specific date, whereas in the case of options, it is not so. Buying of options does not bind one to buy anything. Instead, one is given the right to buy certain products for a price, but one need not do so, if required. The flip side with options is that the deal expires after a specified time period.

Most of the commodity exchanges make their closing prices public. Trading is typically done on a large scale. This is the reason why smaller producers and investors don?t trade in large commodity exchanges. However, the bigger traders on the commodity exchanges work closely with smaller traders and businesses, giving them an opportunity to trade their products on a global scale. The traders on commodity exchanges charge a fee from the smaller businesses for doing so.

The commodities market has emerged during the modern era as an important player in the way people invest and speculate. The commodities market has been revolutionized by online and futures trading software. A lot of people have banked on their business knowledge and turned it into profits, through commodities and futures trading. Commodities are basically interchangeable products, which as a consequence will share a common price. Examples for commodities could be bulk goods such as grains, livestock, oil, cotton, or even financial products like currencies, bonds, and stocks market indices.

Prices in the commodities market are determined by the motives of the buyers and sellers, who together make up the market. Both the buyers and the sellers are of course in the market out of their personal interest, with each one wanting to make more money. The entire concept is as simple as that. If a product is in demand, the prices obviously go up and conversely if the buyers are scared, then the sellers are motivated to push the prices down.

A commodities market can be a cash market or a futures market. In the case of a cash market, again it could be either a spot or forward market. In case of a spot market, you get immediate physical delivery of a commodity, whereas in the forward market, you tend to get your commodity delivered at a specific date in future. Both spot markets and forward markets are together known as ?actuals,? since actual delivery has to be made in either of the types.

A futures contract is a special type of forward contract. They are designed to reduce risks and increase flexibility of forward contracts. The contract, for instance, may specify delivery points and price variations for discrepancies in the quality of the commodity being shipped.

One can get extensive information on commodities market by visiting online resources of leading commodities exchanges or online resources dedicated to the topic.

Grains are a section of food commodities that are traded in large volumes. Grains are non-processed foods such as rice, wheat, pulses, millets and all types of beans. Whole grains are considered unprocessed, and they are readily available and relatively inexpensive. Whole grains normally need to be ground prior to use in cooking or baking. They are recommended for use primarily in regions that are familiar with processing and cooking these types of commodities.

Whole grains and pulses are cleaned but not ground, milled or heated. Grains have a long shelf life if stored under cool conditions and low humidity. Hence, production and trading of grain commodities is an easy and profitable business that has greatly increased. Some of the whole grains are corn, sorghum, and wheat and some pulses are dry beans and lentils. Large-kernel white corn and yellow corn are used in most parts of the world because of their abundance, low price and widespread acceptance. Whole corn is widely used in emergency programs, both by relief agencies and recipient country governments. Sorghum is an unprocessed whole grain used as a staple in parts of Asia and Africa. It has limited utility, as it can present problems of digestibility if processing is not done as required. Wheat is widely accepted, but requires more processing when compared to other whole grains that are converted into food. It can be either soft or hard in texture and white or red in color, and they are processed making different products like bread, semolina or pasta. Rice is the grain commodity next to wheat that is widely accepted and used in most of the regions. Processing rice grains is the simplest and requires less machinery, and preservation is also easier.

All or most of the grains are available in significant volumes and apart from domestic uses; they are used in all categories of food aid programs.

Food commodities are traded to international markets across continents and distributed to reach remote places also. The food commodities are ranked based on availability productivity, and demands of the increasing population. Non-processed food items such as whole grains, pulses, spices, cashews, frozen foods, fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs and many more are food commodities that are traded to native or internal markets and international markets. Processed food commodities include edible oils, butter, cheese, cedars, fruit juices, sauces and all types of flours. The food industry is a multi-billion dollar business and the world’s largest industry.

Handling food commodities includes many important factors that cannot be ignored such as storage, shelf life and temperature conditions. Storage space requirements should be given careful attention, as the amount of space necessary in a warehouse depends upon the total volume of food stored and on the number of different commodities. Separate stacks require more usable volume than one large stack; hence, each commodity should be stacked separately. Shelf life refers to the average amount of time a product may be stored without nutritional deterioration. A food commodity can deteriorate for several reasons such as aging, microbiological decay, chemical and physical degradation and texture changes. Deterioration of food commodities can be reduced or slowed by careful processing, packaging, handling and storing. Universal guidelines for controlling temperature and humidity conditions to suit the various food commodities are impossible, because these conditions and the operating environment vary from place to place. However, some basic instructions can be followed such as keeping all food commodities in dry conditions, storing wet and dry foods separately, cross-ventilation in the warehouse, sunroofs and covering food commodities during transportation.

Besides food commodities being a profitable trading business, large quantities of food items are donated through food distribution programs as relief measures. The commodities required food programs use inexpensive food staples to provide basic nourishment to populations in extreme food security emergencies, as well as for development activities designed to address food security goals.
